"The Logical Song!" by the band Supertramp!

“The Logical Song” by the band Supertramp brings back so many memories!!

I was 13 years old (1979) at the time this song was released  and I remember distinctly how awesome the story/lyrics and music could be put together so beautifully.

Some facts:

1.    I remember thinking at the time, “Supertramp??? What kind of name is that for a band??” It was named after William Henry Davies’ book, “The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp”. Davies spent a significant part of his life as a tramp or vagabond in the United States and United Kingdom, but became known as one of the most popular poets of his time. The book was one of the band's favorites.

2.    This song has been described as a timeless and touching tale about the human condition. The lyrics are a "story of innocence and idealism lost" with Hodgson, who wrote the song, condemning an education system not focused on knowledge and sensitivity.

3.    In addition to the use of castanets, what’s really cool is that SuperTramp makes use of contemporary sound effects that were popular at the time. For example, you’ll hear at the end of the song a double tweet sound of a Mattel Electronic Football Game. Which, if you don’t remember, was one of the first interactive games that was often limited to buttons and sound effects that featured simple red-LED displays. Wow! Now that was high tech at the time!

All I can say is, SUPERTRAMP is SUPERFANTASTIC!

KC and the Sunshine Band, "Please Don't Go!"

The year was 1979! The introduction of the Sony Walkman, Swatch Watch, Apple Computers, Sock Sweat Bands, Skateboarding, Slip n Slides and this song, PleaseDon’t Go, my all time favorite KC and the Sunshine Band record!

A few facts you might not have known??

• The song was the band's first love ballad, and was the first number one song of 1980.

• They took their name from lead vocalist Harry Wayne Casey's last name ("KC") and the "Sunshine Band" from KC's home state of Florida ('The Sunshine State').

•  “KC” worked part-time in a record store. He noticed often that customers would come in not remembering the titles of the records they wanted, and the store would lose the sale — this is the reason so many of his songs repeat their titles over and over.

Where is he now?

In the mid ‘90s, due to the revived interest in the music and fashions of the 1970s, “KC” re-formed the Sunshine Band and plays up to 200 dates a year and continues to produce other artists. He's still rockin'!

You know, if they ever made a movie about “KC’s” life, I could only see one actor playing him…...Jim Carrey!?! Come on! You can see the resemblance!

“Babe I'm leavin', I must be on my way, the time is drawing near…..”

"Babe" is one of the coolest super ballads ever! You know, I could actually slip this song in a mix of my other favorite Super Ballad Band, Air Supply, and you might think it’s the same band!

This single was on Styx's 1979 triple-platinum album Cornerstone. The song was Styx's first, and only, U.S. number-one single.

The song was written by Dennis DeYoung as a birthday present for his wife Suzanne. At first, she did not want it released because she thought it was too personal.

The finished track was recorded as a demo with just DeYoung and Styx members John Panozzo and Chuck Panozzo playing on the track, with DeYoung singing all of the harmonies himself.

The song was not originally intended to be a Styx track, but Styx members James "J.Y" Young and Tommy Shaw convinced DeYoung to put the song on Cornerstone. As a result, DeYoung's demo was placed on the album with Shaw overdubbing a guitar solo in the song's middle section. The track became a major hit!

I'm joining VH1 and ranking this the most "softsational" soft rock song of all time!

Jefferson Starship! "Jane!"

Mickey Thomas, was the new kid on the block when he joined Jefferson Starship in the summer of 1979 and immediately started working on the Freedom at Point Zero album.  Mickey says that “Jane” was always the song of “Firsts”. The first song he rehearsed with the band, the first song they recorded and the first song they released which was a #1 debut for the group.

So, needless to say, the success of “Jane”, made life a lot easier for Mickey and the new Jefferson Starship band. The song is actually about someone who can't relate to a girl that just doesn't understand what's best for her when it comes to love.

Mickey Thomas has such an incredible voice. In this song, they kind of remind me of Kansas a bit. All around great musicianship. I could play the first 25 seconds of this song over and over. It has to be one of the best intro’s ever!  Actually, now that I think about it, I bet Mickey Thomas could win American Idol in 25 seconds!

Hey, doesn’t Mickey Thomas look a lot like the late Canadian magician Doug Henning?

 Or wait! Maybe Tony Orlando?
