Remember this One-Hit Wonder? “Pilot of the Airwaves”!
In 1980, I had this 45 and played it over and over and over again on my little blue and red hand held turn table (it actually would fold up like a suitcase and I could carry it anywhere)! “Pilot of the Airwaves”, an ode to an unknown DJ by Charlie Dore is a perfect example of a One-Hit Wonder. It literally “flew” in and out like a flash but when it hit, it hit BIG! Although this song would be considered her only personal hit, Charlie wrote other hits for Celine Dion, Sheena Easton, Tina Turner and Barry Manilow.
Funny, I hadn’t actually heard this song on the radio literally since the early 80’s! I must confess though, it still “sounds good to me” after 30 years!

Earth Wind and Fire!! Lets Groove!
Awwwwww yeah!!!! Check this video out! A true classic song that transcends generations and musical tastes! OK! That's it! Here is what I'm gonna do. Invent a time machine, go back to 1981, get in my old Black ‘77 Cutlass Supreme, put in the 8 track of the EWF Album Raise!, crank it up and cruise down shoreline in Corpus Christi Texas baby! Need I say more? Wait, does the lead singer in this video look like Don Cheadle with a beard and a George Jefferson receding hairline? Just saying...

Split Enz.....
A good friend of mine (Thanks Daryl!) reminded me of this awesome 80’s hit song by the group Split Enz. I started thinking. I would have loved to be in the room when the band came up with this name. Split Enz?? Why not, “Dandruff?” Or “Hair Follicle”? Their hair was pretty wild so it MUST have been a huge topic of discussion.
Anyway, Split Enz was a New Zealand band that formed in '71 at the University of Auckland featuring Phil Judd, Mike Chunn, Robert Gillies, Noel Crombie and brothers Tim Finn and Neil Finn (who later formed Crowded House). Bet you didn't know that?
They achieved huge success with this single "I Got You", and built a pretty large cult following. Their musical style was eclectic and original and influenced by New Wave and Pop.
They initially spelled the name of the band "Split Ends" but later changed it to "Split ENZ" shortly before their first trip to Australia, to signify their New Zealand roots (NZ is a common abbreviation for New Zealand). Enjoy!
